Enabling DNSSEC introduces a cryptographic layer to a domain name registry, establishing an authenticated chain of trust within the DNS. This protocol modification ensures that responses between a user and a server are verified as authentic throughout the multiple layers of the internet.

Because DNSSEC is a fundamental change to how DNS queries are handled, it requires precise management. An error made to a signed zone can cause it to appear offline or "bogus" to validating resolvers worldwide. It is therefore essential to maintain a record of which domain names have these DS records active. Changing nameservers to a different provider without first removing or re-creating these specific DNSSEC signatures will break the chain of trust, resulting in the domain and its associated services becoming untrusted and unreachable across the internet.
